Understanding the 3 Phases of Tattoo Healing
Tattoo healing doesn’t happen overnight. Rather, it is a long process involving swelling, itching, and peeling of the skin. Here we have divided the healing process into the 3 stages to make you aware about each change your tattoo goes through:
After getting a tattoo, you await healing desperately. However, it takes time to heal your tattoo. This is because tattooing is complicated process involving a skin piercing and ink embedding. This is why it takes a long time for that punctured skin to be healed. Remember, the time of healing can be as long as 2-3 months. Here we have broken down the tattoo healing process into three key stages:
The First Phase of Tattoo Healing:
The primary stage of tattoo healing begins after getting a tattoo. At this stage, your tattoo is still a wound caused by tiny punctures over your skin. Therefore, you need to be careful about your tattoos as it is prone to infection and ink fading. You will see the smudging of ink on the tattoo spot for several days.
Here are the things you must keep in mind at this stage:
- Avoid touching your tattoo as germs or bacterial can be passed on by your hands.
- Don’t use perfumed or colored soaps to wash the tattoo spot
- Avoid applying sunscreen or makeup
- Avoid direct water contact or submerging for longer
- Don’t panic if your tattoo is red or swollen for few hours as it is normal procedures. However, you should not pick, scratch or pull the fresh tattooing skin.
The Second Phase of Tattoo Healing:
At this stage, you experience itching and irritation. The itching phase may be continued for weeks or few days. Don’t worry and face that phase with patience as it is natural process. Avoid scratching your skin if it starts to peel out of itching. You can use a moisturizer to control itching.
The Third Phase of Tattoo Healing:
After going through the above given phases, you can have your tattoos healed at the third stage. However, you should continue with your hygiene and caring regimen, even when your tattoo is looking completely healed. You can apply moisturizer ointment to prevent it from getting dried. You may see final layer of the healed skin falling off as you apply the moisturizing cream during this process.
Follow the Instructions Given By Your Tattoo Artist:
Every artist has their own set of aftercare for a tattoo. However, all guidelines are based on general instructions to prevent any mishaps, damages, or degradation to your new body art. If you are not careful about your tattoos, you are on the verge of losing your beautiful design. Remember, you are responsible for the aftercare of your tattoo while a tattoo artist can only give you a piece of advice.
So, these were the important stages of tattoo healing so that you face the process with patience and care as well. However, see your physician if you are having doubt of something unpleasant.
