Things You Always Want to Know About Genital Warts
From origin, causes to treatment, explore the information covering up everything about genital warts you must know.
What are Genital Warts?
Genital warts are the sexually transmitted infection on the human genital parts. They are caused by HPV or Human Papiloma Virus, which spread during the sexual intercourse. Generally, an affected person experiences pain, itching and discomfort.
Do I Have the Genital Warts?
Sometime, genital warts are too tiny to be seen from the eyes though you can feel the symptoms like itching, pain bleeding, vaginal discharge and burning. The condition is even painful when these warts become enlarged.
Generally, their diameter is of 1.5 mm and may either be in singly (in most cases) or in clusters and bleed in some cases. These small skin growths are flesh colored and slightly darker with the bumpy and soft top resembling a cauliflower.
A physician is the only person who can confirm that you have genital warts. However, you must see your doctor if you or your partner experiences pain, itching, or burning sensation near or around the genitals. Besides, you must also go for the medical examination after having unprotected sex with a new partner or you are pregnant or planned to do so.
In males, these outbreaks are found near the genital areas like
- on the penis
- on the scrotum
- on the groin
- on the thighs
- inside or around the anus
While in females, the common affected parts are
- Inside and Outside of the Vagina or Anus
- The cervix
Genital warts can also be found on the lips, tongue, mouth and throat which are caused by having oral sex with the infected person.
What is the Cause of Genital Warts?
They are caused by the HPV or Human Papilloma Virus, which is formed around the anal and the reproductive organs of the body. It is the sexually transmitted infection which is caused by having penetrative sex with the affected person.
Nearly 30 types of HPV are identified near the genital and anal areas though study shows that only types 6 and 11 are responsible for the genital warts. It is also found that condom reduces the risk of HPV as it covers most of the genital area. HPV tends to pass on even after the disappearing of the warts. The virus can transmits from the warts on the hand to the genital or from the affected pregnant mother to her baby at birth; but both are the rarest cases.
However, HPV is not transmitted from hugging, kissing, sharing cutlery or baths, towels.
How Genital Warts are Diagnosed?
The initial treatment steps for genital warts go through several check-ups including external and internal examination of genitals, and biopsy (very rare). The later stages of the treatment are decided by the severity and numbers of your warts. The primary aim of the diagnosis is to remove the visible warts by using cream or ointment, freezing, heat, surgery, and laser treatment. The treatment may be repeated many times for the stubborn warts.
In some people the warts go away quickly but for others the warts are stubborn and treatment may have to be repeated a number of times. Therefore, you must follow the guidelines of your doctor and visit for prescribed check-ups. To treat the affected part of the skin, the physician may advise you to avoid having sex for some time.
You can also adapt several preventive measures for genital warts like wearing condoms and seek medical advice in case you are suspicious of them.
