With the growing demand for tattoos on epidermal (skin) or mucous membrane areas for vanity pleasure, there is a need to clarity which is truly mucous membranes and those that are not; since not all membranes secrete mucus. The mucous membranes are linings of mostly endodermal origin, covered in epithelium, which is a tissue, composed of layers of cells. Their function is involved in absorption and secretion. They line various body cavities that are exposed to the external environment and internal organs. They are at several places throughout the body that engages or are continuous with skin: such as at the nostrils, the lips, the ears, the genital area, and the anus. The sticky, thick fluid secreted by the mucous membranes and gland is termed mucus. Mucous membrane refers to where they are found in the body and not every mucous membrane secretes mucus.
