In simple words, sunburn is a type of burn caused by overexposure to sun. The signs of sunburn are redness, rashes, and peeling of the skin that look different than the covered area.

While medical assistance is recommended for severe sunburns, you can use simple home remedies for mild sunburns.

Baking Soda:

Baking soda is an effective home remedy for sunburn, thanks to its alkaline nature. Plus, it is loaded with antiseptic properties to ease your itchy sensation. Here is a simple method to use baking soda for sunburn.

Mix one cup of baking soda to the bathtub filled with cold water. Stir well. Soak in the water for nearly 15-20 minutes. Afterwards, pat dry with clean towel. Repeat it daily till you see improvements.

Alternatively, you can use the paste of the baking soda by adding enough water to 4 tbsp. of the soda. Apply the paste to the affected parts of the body. Leave it for 15 minutes and wash it off with lukewarm water.

Black Tea:

Apply the solution on your affected parts of the skin using cotton ball.Wait till it dries completely and reapply three or four times, as necessary; you don’t need to wash it off. Repeat it daily till you see improvement.

Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar contains therapeutic properties like Aspirin. This is why it is a good home remedy for sunburn symptoms like pain, inflammation and itching. You can use the vinegar in many ways like…

  • Apply white vinegar to the affected areas using cotton balls.
  • Mix one cup of apple cider vinegar to a bathtub filled with lukewarm water. Soak in this water for about half an hour. It balances the pH level of the affected skin and enhances the healing. Repeat the process daily till your skin is healed.
  • Take apple cider vinegar and cool water in equal parts. Dab large cotton balls in the solution and apply them over the affected parts. Keep them dabbed to the skin until they become dried. Repeat is several times a day to see improvement.

Aloe Vera:

Aloe vera is an effective home remedy for various skin concerns. It contains anti-inflammatory and soothing properties to heal the various symptoms of sunburn.

Take a fresh leaf of aloe vera and peel it off to extract the gel like substance. Store the gel in the refrigerator for nearly 30 hours to let it be set. Now, apply the chilled aloe vera gel on the affected parts of the skin. Let it dry so that the skin can absorb the therapeutic contents. Afterwards, wash it off with lukewarm water and pat it dry with a clean towel. You can also use OTC aloe vera gel in case you don’t have an aloe vera plant.

Oatmeal:

Oatmeal is a great skin remedy for rashes, inflammation and healing. It helps skin restore moisture while easing the irritation.

Fill the bathtub with cool water and add one cup of oatmeal to it and mix thoroughly. Soak in the bath water for about half an hour. Pat yourself dry (avoid rubbing the towel). Repeat the process once in a day to ease your sunburn signs.

The other way to use oatmeal is to use cook it with enough water till it gets a paste like consistency. Let it cool. Afterwards, apply it liberally to the damaged skin. However, don’t rub the oatmeal on your skin. Leave it on the skin for half an hour and then wash it off with cool water. Repeat the remedy once a day to see improvement.

Cool Compress:

The easiest way to get relief from sunburn is using cool compress. And it gives you instant relief from sunburn. Wrap some ice cubes in a towel. Now, apply it on the affected parts. Dab it for a few minutes. Don’t apply the ice cubes directly to the skin as it aggravates burning.
