Dermarolling was officially introduced to the world in mid of 90’s. During these 20 years, dermarolling has become more common technique to treat beauty concerns like scars, wrinkles, and ageing signs. Dermarolling is performed with the handheld roller attached with the surgical needles. It is rolled over the skin so that the needles puncture the skin to stimulate reparation and collagen production. So, it is clear that needles are the most functional part of the roller. In other words, the efficiency of dermarolling is determined by the length of the needles. However, not all needles do the same thing!

Whether it’s 0.25 mm needle or 5 mm, every needle length has its own role. Some are used to enhance the absorption power of skin care products; some are used to treat wrinkles and scars.

0.25 MM Needle:

It is the most basic size of dermarolling needle and is used to enhance the absorption effect of the skin care products. It doesn’t cause pain due to its small length. However, it is not efficient for the collagen production.

0.5 MM Needle:

It is bigger in size than .25 mm and is ideal to treat scars, wrinkles, UV damage and hyperpigmentation. It also boosts skin’s efficiency to absorb the skin care products. .5 mm can be used for multiple treatments on a monthly basis. However, the needle size causes bleeding and pain.

0.75 to 1.0 mm Needle:

.75 to 1.00 mm rollers are used to treat wrinkles, scars, and stretchmark as they have deep penetration.

1.5 to 3.0 mm Needle:

1.5 to 3.0 mm dermarolling needles are efficient, though they are used by professionals only to treat severe scarring, stretch marks and skin ailments. They require delicate handling and expertise and the process involves bleeding and pain.

You should use Dr. Numb numbing cream 45 minutes before your dermarolling to reduce pain and discomfort. Numbing cream has lidocaine that blocks the nerve endings so that they can’t send pain signal to the brain.

And Some Precautions You Must Keep in Mind While Using Dermaroller…

  • Don’t share your dermaroller as it can lead to skin infections due to the use of same needles on different skins.
  • Always choose professionals for the needle sizes more than 1.0 mm
  • Use large needles (or those above 1.0 mm) on larger parts of the skin such as back, shoulder, legs and arms. Smaller size needles are good for the face.
  • Keep an interval of 4-6 weeks between the procedures to see improvements.
  • Make sure to disinfect your dermaroller after each use. You can use hydrogen peroxide and isopropyl alcohol to clean it.
