What is contact dermatitis?
It is often defined as a skin condition which appear like a simple rash, but it is quite complex when it comes to the causes. Most of the time, it occurwhen one is exposed to irritants and allergens and their skin react against. Though the treatment is simple enough, yet it is important for one to know about the different causesof contact dermatitis and how to prevent it.
This condition is basically a localized rash on the skin which is said to occur when a person comes into contact with a foreign substance. It causes superficial irritation. In most of the cases, inflammation is visible and the problem doesn’t go down deeper. It is constrained to the outer dermis and the epidermis. This problem can linger for days and you will get rid of it after a certain period of time.
What causes contact dermatitis?
Well, what basically cause will vary according to the type of dermatitis you are suffering from. Check for details below:
Irritant dermatitis: When a person come in contact with strong chemicals like bleach, such type of dermatitiscan flare up. And this can get severe when one gradually goes through frequent wet working or working with milder chemical element, for example shampoo.
Allergic dermatitis: The biggest problem with this type of dermatitis is that it can take several days, months or even years for the allergy to develop completely. It might occurquickly after having few contacts with the allergic substance like some particular colour or chemical. And once you are allergic, it can persist for life. Yes, it can happen at any time, also when you have had no problems previously with the same in past.
There are many, including:
- Red rashes
- Formation of blisters or wheals
- Itchy burning skin
And so on. While these are the most common signs of contact dermatitis, it is one worth noticing that the immediate area and some surrounding patches of skin which come in contact with the irritant will become affected too. Moreover, scratching, rubbing, and prolonged exposure to sunlight can worsen the skin condition.
Which is the right Treatment for Contact Dermatitis?
Just like any other ailment, when it is about treatment for contact dermatitis, early intervention is the best way out. In case you are already aware of the recent contact with an irritant, quickly wash the area with soap and water. But if it has already set in, you can go for a wash or dip in a weak acid solution. This will help ease the itching sensation.
What if blistering occurs? You can opt for colloidal oatmeal, calamine lotion, and oral antihistamines to reduce itching as well. And amidst all of these treatments, one thing you need to remember when suffering from contact dermatitis is not scratch the area. This will aggravate the skin condition.
