You must be extra careful while doing piercing at home as a wrong way can lead to infection and pain.

Well, there may be many reasons making you to do body piercing at home, instead of going to professional. It may be because your state is not allowing for piercing as you’re below the legal age or there are no professional piercers in your city. Whatever reason you may have, you must make your piercing safe, infection free and sanitary as possible.

If you don’t, your pierced area is exposed to the infection occurring in the form of puss, redness, swelling and pain. So, it makes sense to keep these safety and hygiene practices in mind while doing piercing yourself at home.

Choose the Area Wisely:

Not all body parts you can pierce at home. Some parts like earlobes, nose and belly button are areas you can pierce yourself. However, you must go to professional piercer, when it comes to pierce the sensitive areas near eye, or the top of your ear.  Avoid taking risk as you can damage your body part.

Wash Your Hands:

That’s the basic yet essential step to ensure the proper hygiene in piercing. You must know that hands carry germs and they may pass on to the piercing tools and open piercing wounds. This is why you must sanitize your hands with an antibacterial soap.  Use clean towel to dry your hands.

Clean the Piercing Area:

After sanitizing your hands, clean the area to be pierced with rubbing alcohol. Put some rubbing alcohol onto cotton ball and clean the area with it. Avoid touching the area again once it is cleaned.

Sterilize the Piercing Needle:

You are advised to use the packaged needle. However, if you don’t have it, you can sterilize the used or opened needle. Take rubbing alcohol in a bowl and soak the needle in it. The strong disinfectant properties of rubbing alcohol will kill the bacteria, thereby lowering the chance of infection.

Make sure you’re using a piercing needle rather than sewing needle or any other type. Piercing needles are meant for that purpose and have proper size and sharpness to prevent unnecessary damage to the skin.

Choose the Quality Jewelry

Always use quality jewelry to lower the chances of infection, reaction or irritation. According to the experts, you must use jewelry piece made of surgical steel, gold, and titanium. If you buy a cheap jewelry, you can have a high infection rate. Clean the jewelry with rubbing alcohol before wearing.

Where You Want to Pierce?

Mark the area with a dot where you want to perform piercing. Make sure it is on the exact place. Take the needle and hold it with a steady grip in a correct angle. If you fear of pain, you can use numbing cream on that area before 30 minutes. Push the needle in “one go” until it is at the halfway through your ear. Leave it for 30 minutes so that the hole gets its size.

These are the steps of the piercing at home. Make sure to follow the piercing after care instructions to speed up the healing process.
