5 Ways to Prevent Bed Sores

With little precautions and medication, you can reduce the chances of getting bed sores while being on the bed or wheelchair for longer time.

Bed Sores

Bed sores or pressure ulcers are caused by excessive pressure on the skin while being on bed or on the wheel chair for a longer time. They are characterized by the red lesions which can turn into wounds over a time and have a tendency to catch an infection. The common affected areas are shoulder blades, tailbone, elbows, heels and hips as these areas have little muscles and fat.

If the body at the rest for longer time, there is very less or no mobility, hindering adequate blood flow to the skin, depriving it of nutrients and oxygen which aggravate the bed sores.

Repositions frequently

To avoid your skin from being pressurized, you must change your position very often. Make sure to reposition your body at least every couple of hours. For instance, you can turn your side after lying on your back for a while. Ask someone to help you change your position if you are unable to do it yourself. Similarly, you can change your position while on the wheelchair by shifting your weight, doing wheelchair pushups, and using a cushion to relive pressure.

Take Care of Your Skin:

Keep your skin clean and dry to minimize the chances of developing bed sores. Clean your skin with mild soap and warm water. Ask your caregiver or family members to clean the hard to reach body parts. Pat dry your skin with a towel rather than rubbing it.

Pillows:

Pillows save your skin from developing sores as it reduces the friction while resting on the hard surfaces. You can keep the pillow between your knees and ankles if you are resting on your side.

Exercise
Even thinking about exercise may irritate you while being on the bed for a longer time. But you can do few ranges of motion exercises in your bed to minimize the chances of bed sores. You can do arm lift by holding your arm as high you can for 15-20 seconds.

Use Medications to Treat Sores:
