5 Belly Button Piercing Care Tips You Can’t Afford to Skip
Belly button piercing is the most popular piercing after ear and nose. Getting a belly button piercing is an exciting experience. If you have got the one, you are required to follow the aftercare regimen to keep it healthy and away from infection. Here we have come up with the general instructions to take care of fresh belly button piercing.
Clean Hands Before and After Handling Your Piercing:
Make sure to clean your hands before touching your belly button. This is because there are germs and debris accumulated on the hands, thereby making your piercing prone to infection. Wash your hand with antibacterial soap and rinse it thoroughly to remove the dirt and oils from your fingers. File you nails short to avoid getting dirt on them.
Clean Your Piercing Daily:
Cleaning your piercing daily is important to avoid infections and speed up the healing process. Here are the some basic tips to clean the piercing:
- Dip cotton swab in warm water to wipe debris near the piercing area
- Wash your piercing with antibacterial soap in the shower by adding soap amount to your fingertips to “massage” the area for few seconds. Go to shower to rinse off the soap lather. Use paper towel to pat it dry. Repeat the process twice a day.
- Avoid using alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean the piercing as it can irritate the skin.
- Don’t use ointment as it may cut down the supply of oxygen to the belly button area.
- Consider taking vitamins like Vitamin C or Zinc to speed up your healing.
Use Saline Water Solution to Clean the Piercing:
Saline water is said to be effective to clean the piercing as it is packed with the healing properties. It also removes the bacteria.
You can make saline solution for piercing by adding ¼ tbsp. of sea salt to 236 ml of boiled water. Dip a folded paper and give your pierced area a warm compress. You can also use sea salt spray available in drug store.
Avoid Removing the Jewelry Very Often:
Keep the jewelry in place for at least 6 months. It is the time when healing period closes the piercing gauge, making it difficult for you to wear the jewelry again.
Wear Loose Clothes:
Tight clothes or their fabrics can snuggle into your navel jewelry, causing pain or skin damage. Besides, tight clothes can cut off the supply of air to the area. Therefore, wear loose garments which are in breathable fabrics like cotton. Minimize the use of synthetic clothes. Avoid putting off your clothes in hurry or roughly. Try to sleep on your back and sides to avoid hurting your belly.
So, these are the steps you must keep in mind after getting navel piercing. See your physician immediately if you notice something unusual or piercing is not getting healed.
